GOV’T AGENCIES IN REGION 1 EXTEND SUPPORT TO SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM

Beneficiaries of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Ilocos Region are assured of continued support from the government.

In a meeting held recently, member-agencies of the Regional Inter-Agency Committee (RIAC) on SLP presented their accomplishments and commitments for the program beneficiaries who are likewise Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program recipients.
According to Amanda Galang, senior agriculturist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), their agency conducted series of skills training and turn-over of materials to individual and group beneficiaries.

“We conducted series of trainings to the qualified beneficiaries before we award the projects to ensure the smooth implementation of the programs,” Galang said.

The following skills trainings which were rolled out to a number of beneficiaries in the region include: catfish culture to 10 beneficiaries, aqua silver culture to 10 beneficiaries, fish cage to 38 beneficiaries, sea
urchin to 10 beneficiaries, and seaweed farming to 10 beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jimuel Cardenas of the Department of Health (DOH) Region 1 has expressed the department’s support in the employment opportunities of 4Ps beneficiaries who are newly graduates, licensed nurses, midwives, dentists, or medical doctor.

Also, qualified beneficiaries for the Doctor of Medicine course may also apply for full scholarship grant with the DOH.

“Sa last quarter ng taon puwede nang ipasa ng DSWD ang mga pangalan ng mga graduate para sa posibleng employment sa taong 2019. Puwede na rin mag-inquire sa DOH ang mga interesadong beneficiary para sa scholarship ng mga kukuha ng kursong medisina,” Cardenas said.

The Deparment of Trade (DOT), on the other hand, reported to the council the launching of Ilog (River) Tourism, a floating restaurant at the mangrove area in Balingasay, Bolinao River which is similar to Loboc River in Bohol.

Modesto Ding Baloloy, chief tourism officer of DOT-1 reported that the agency is considering the exploration and development of faith tourism, eco-tourism, fish and farm tourism in the region.

He added that as of this quarter, the DOT-1 has conducted professional tour guiding seminar and produced 67 new professional tour guides, as the demand for ASEAN standards in tour services increases.

Baloloy also suggested the Department of Education and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to apply a more rigorous, hands-on training in the K-12 curriculum so that graduates can meet the demands of the industry.

He said: “May mga nag i-inquire na schools ngayon sa DOT for their graduates for the on-the-job training. DOT is looking into helping the graduates to be more capacitated in the industry dahil kailangan na nating pumantay sa ASEAN standards.”

Meanwhile, Municipal Councilor Alexander Romeo Obong attended the meeting on behalf of Municipal Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. de Guzman.

In his inspirational message, Obong said, “I believe in the positive impact of the 4Ps especially in the preparation of the children beneficiaries for their employment as a good number of graduates are produced since its implementation.”

Obong also encouraged that all municipal links should continue to monitor the status of the beneficiaries, that their monthly allowances are to be spent wisely especially to their children’s education.  Source - (JNPD/MEGRP/PIA-1)
