PHIVOLCS URGES PUBLIC TO JOIN NATIONWIDE QUAKE DRILL ON JUNE 20, 2019

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) once again urges the public to prepare for earthquakes—including the Big One, a hypothetical massive temblor that could strike Metro Manila and other areas at any time.

PHIVOLCS is calling on the public to participate in the second quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) set to take place on June 20, 2019 (Thursday) at 2 p.m.

According to the media release issued by the agency on Wednesday, the activity will be triggered by a ceremonial pressing of the button to be hosted by the city government of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur.

PHIVOLCS said it has prepared earthquake hazard and impact scenarios to be used as a guide in planning and executing the earthquake drills.

The Office of Civil Defense regional offices have identified pilot sites nationwide that will likewise implement their evacuation procedures and response plans.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that "any active faults that have not generated historical surface-rupturing events have higher potential to generate a large earthquake also known as 'The Big One' which can significantly affect different areas in the Philippines."

"Hence, everyone should be preparing for it," it added.

ONLY INDIGENT SENIOR CITIZENS ARE QUALIFIED TO RECEIVE SOCIAL PENSION – DSWD

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reiterates that only indigent senior citizens are qualified to receive the social pension provided for by Republic Act (RA) 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.

Social Pension refers to the monthly stipend amounting to P500 to augment the daily subsistence and other medical needs of indigent senior citizens. It is being implemented by DSWD under the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens (SPISC) Program.

RA 9994 specifies that seniors qualified to receive social pension are those who are frail, sickly or with disability; without any pension from other government agencies; and without a permanent source of income or source of financial assistance/compensation to support their basic needs.

Inasmuch as DSWD would want to include all senior citizens, the budget for the SPISC is limited.

SPISC is being implemented by DSWD in coordination with City or Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (C/MSWDO) as well as with the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA).

Under the guidelines of the program, the Barangay Senior Citizens Association may recommend or submit a list of potential beneficiaries to the OSCA Head or to the C/MSWDO. The OSCA Head shall consolidate the list of all potential beneficiaries certified by the C/MSWDO for submission to the concerned DSWD Field Office (FO). The DSWD FO shall then cross-match the consolidated list submitted with the available data from Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), and private insurance companies. The FO’s social worker or focal person shall take the lead in the conduct of assessment of the list of potential beneficiaries.

KIDS INCREASINGLY EXPOSED TO ONLINE CYBER ATTACKS

Internet cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab warned parents in the Philippines that their children are increasingly at risk from cybersecurity threats online.

A study by Kaspersky revealed that web-based infections in the country increased by 230 percent at 31.89 million in 2018 compared to 9.49 million in 2017 which were scanned and blocked by its products when users accessed websites or downloaded files.

The company said that 82.46 percent of web threats for the period of January to December last year have attempted to attack home users in the Philippines.

“Kaspersky strongly advises Filipino parents to keep a closer eye on their children’s online activities on the heels of soaring web threats the company has been monitoring in the country,” said Kaspersky in a statement on Thursday.

Data from the cybersecurity company disclosed that the following websites are the most popular among Filipino children: software, audio and video (42.04 percent); Internet communication sites such as social networks, messengers, chats and online forum (29.17 percent); e-commerce or online stores (16.04 percent); news (4.76 percent); and computer games (3.76 percent).

“When it comes to kids’ online safety though, we recommend that parents should step in so that the balance is tipped for good. By staying in constant contact with them plus getting a little help from advanced security solutions, parents can continue to harness the positive benefits of the Internet and keep their children safe from online dangers simultaneously,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Kaspersky Southeast Asia.

The company advised parents to be in constant communication with their children and monitor their online activities from an early age.

Parents should likewise avail of the resources provided by some companies or organizations such as parental control software as well as tips and techniques to better manage kids who use digital devices.
