ILOCOS SUR HONORS VIGAN NEW WONDER CITY TITLE

VIGAN CITY- ILOCOS SUR Governor Ryan Singson congratulated the City of Vigan after it was officially installed as one of the world’s new seven wonder cities. “Vigan is a living Cultural Sanctuary and a unique example of a community that focused its skills on cultural and environmental preservation.”, Gov. Ryan Singson said.

The Governor hopes that this new achievement will inspire each and every Filipino to work hand-in-hand for the realization of their dreams. Last May 7,2015, Swiss filmmaker Bernard Weber, president of the New Seven wonder Cities, handed a bronze plaque to Vigan Mayor Eva Singson-Medina during a ceremony in front of St. Paul Cathedral, signifying heritage city’s election as one of the world’s wonder cities. “With great motivation and participation from Filipinos all over the world, it’s possible for a small city like Vigan to achieve its dream.”, Weber said. Other winners include Beirut in Lebanon, Havana in Cuba ,La Paz in Bolivia, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Doha in Qatar and Durban in South Africa. Some 3,000 Vigan residents spilled into Plaza Salcedo to watch the conferment in front of the St. Paul Cathedral. Witnessing the event were Vice President Jejomar Binay, who served as the guest of honor and speaker; Senator Cynthia Villar; Bernard Weber, Jean-Paul de la Fuente, director of N7W Foundation; Ilocos Sur officials led by Governor Ryan Luis Singson; Congressmen Ronald V. Singson (1st district- Ilocos Sur) and Eric D. Singson (2nd district- Ilocos Sur); and city government officials. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra also performed in front of the Cathedral with Ilocano songs and tunes from the “The Sound of Music”. Students from six Vigan schools wowed the crowd with “Vigan: A History through Dance." which describe the Malay, Chinese, Spanish, American and Japanese influence that shaped the city. The Vigan heritage Choir sang its “Wonder Hymm” composed by Ato Santiago. Weber said he Philippines was the only country to have three wonders. The Puerto Princessa Underground River in Palawan had earlier made it to the Seven Natural Wonders list. Weber also acknowledged the Ifugao Rice Terraces as original wonder. More than 1,200 cities from 200 countries were included in the initial balloting for the New Seven Wonder Cities. Voting was done online or via digital applications on tablets and Smartphones  (L.
