AGRI PROJECTS CONTINUE TO TRANSFORM RURAL LIVES

Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala implored the support of Cebuano farmers and fishers so that the government will be able to sustain economic growth and development within their community.

The Agri Chief expressed confidence that the government’s presence and continued assistance to the rural communities will transform the lives of farmers and fisher folks in the countryside for the better.

“Nasimulan na po natin ito, at kailangan lamang po na ipagpatuloy at ma-sustain,” Alcala stressed during farmers and fisherfolks consultation and forum held in Santander, Southern Cebu on April 25, 2016.

Alcala acknowledged that the national government can further extend assistance especially in the far-flung and remote areas in the country through the cooperation of local government (LGU) officials – the mayor, vice mayor, and Sangguniang Bayan, and congressman.

In return, the local officials assured that DA interventions will reach and trickle down to their respective constituents.

Assistance include lakatan and cardaba banana planting materials, and technology sharing including advance tap working and multiple root stock system for indian mango, as well as lanzones and longkong production.

The agri chief said that the improved agricultural technologies are available, and are just awaiting dissemination.

As such, barangay agriculture officials will undergo training together to acquire certificates from TESDA. They will also be given the required tools and other inputs that will be used for planting.

“Sana po samantalahin ito ng mga taga-Santander, hindi po tayo maya’t maya nagkikita.”

Alcala took the opportunity to listen to the qualms of the Cebuano farmers and fishers, stressing that their suggestions will be considered.

Prior to the consultation, the Agri Secretary announced the commencement of the rehabilitation of Looc-Talisay Farm to Market Road (FMR) under the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) I-BUILD component.

“The 6.96 kilometers long Looc-Talisay FMR will reduce travel time by 16 minutes - from 25 minutes without the subproject to just 9 minutes upon project completion,” he said.

The FMR, with a total funding of P 69,596,907.44, will facilitate the transportation of the primary agricultural commodities in the community, which include chicken, coconut, corn and cassava produced by 6,858 farmer beneficiaries. # Source - Marlo Asis, DA-AFID/www.da.gov.ph
