DOT TRAINS TOURIST GUIDES OF ILOCOS SUR

Officers of the newly organized group of tourist guides in Ilocos Sur took their oath of office before the governor of the province Wednesday morning.

The group composed of thirty five individuals who went through almost a month of training undertaken by the Department of Tourism Region 1 and Tourism Office of Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur on May 21 to June 10, 2015.

The group was organized to boost the tourism industry and to focus more on the potential of newly discovered tourism sites in the province. As Governor Ryan Singson said, there are a lot of tourist destinations that are yet to be promoted and develop. This necessitates a pool of tourist guides.

“I congratulate you all. Your work begins now to see that the tourists coming to Ilocos Sur are properly served and tourist destinations are properly promoted” Gov. Ryan Singson addressed.

According to Provincial Tourism Officer Mr. Michael Ryan Astom, the province aims to professionalized service delivery to the visitors who come in and out of the province especially that Vigan City is now listed as one of the New Seven Wonder Cities of the World. Tourists from other countries and other provinces according to Astom, usually import tourist guides from Manila when they visit Ilocos Sur. This is a scenario they want to alter and make it locally handled.

The Provincial Government provides the remuneration to the tourist guides by 60-40 arrangement. Sixty percent of the income for tourism will be given to tourist guides and forty percent will go the province.

The group members call themselves as T.G.I.S (Tourist Guides of Ilocos Sur). They have yet to register to the Securities and Exchange Commission to start officially their venture. #  Source – BDMayor, PIO-Ilocos Sur)
