Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Agribusiness and High Value Crops Evelyn Laviña led the opening of the 2016 World Food Day themed: “Climate is changing, food and agriculture must too."
The annual celebration, which started in 1945, calls for the unified struggle of mankind against hunger and malnutrition.
It is observed every 16th of October, coinciding with the founding anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
To date, about 150 member countries participate in the celebration, which aims to encourage people of all races to take actions toward the attainment of sustainable food supply for everyone.
In her message, Laviña encouraged the DA family to defend the welfare of the food producers and protect them from the negative impacts of climate change. She also stressed the importance of employing an efficient waste management system within the food chain in order to lessen the impacts of the ever-changing extreme weather conditions.
Assistant Secretary for Planning, Project Development, & Special Projects and this year’s National Steering Committee Chair Lerey Panes, in his message, congratulated the members of the DA family for their unending will and dedication in acting as frontline defenders and making sure that climate smart interventions are carried out for the welfare of the farmers nationwide.
“We should act now in promoting interventions because from developing countries up to the first world countries, we are all the same in the eyes of climate change.” He added. The weeklong celebration kicked-off with the opening of exhibits led by Laviña, Panes and Sarah Lacson of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
The annual WFD aims to increase awareness and promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world as well as strengthen international solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. It aims to ultimately put an end to world hunger. # Source - (Carlos Baldosa/DA-AFID)/www.da.gov.ph
