The Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) conducted the 2nd Governor Ryan Rescuelympics in Mount Caniaw in this town which was participated by twenty-one (21) rescue teams from the different municipalities.

The participants include municipalties of Santa, Sta. Lucia, Sugpon, Quirino, Bantay, Alilem, Lidlidda, Cervantes, Cabugao, San Esteban, Sigay, Caoayan, San Emilio, Del Pilar, Burgos, Nagbukel, Banayoyo, Santiago and San Vicente and the two cities- Vigan and Candon.

Their agility, flexibility, strength and vigilance were measured through the different events organized by the PDRRMC officers such as the rescue knot tying using a pulley, sand bag carry (shoulder carry), survival jungle rescue, ascending and descending the victim and water rescue.

“We added mountainous track which is the survival jungle rescue. In this activity our rescues will be trained how to apply first aid, survival cooking and provide improvised stretcher”, Michael Chan, PDRRMO said.

This is the second year of the activity since it was launched July last year through the leadership of Governor Ryan Singson to prepare and equip the disaster responders in every municipality.

“As we can see, the first Rescuelympics was very successful. This kind of activity provides advancement to our rescuers so we will conduct it every year. But aside from this training, we will also look into the equipment needed by the rescuers in each municipality,” Gov. Ryan concluded.

The activity lasted for three days. The team of Santa which bagged the 2nd place last year is this year’s Rescuelympics champion followed by team of Sta. Lucia. Team of Sugpon maintained its rank last year as third place. As an award, the teams received 100 thousand, 50 thousand and 25 thousand pesos worth of rescue tools and equipment respectively. #  Source – PIO Ilocos Sur
