The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has gone around processing establishments in Ilocos Sur and advised food processors to focus on food safety.
Ramon Sumabat, DOST chief in Ilocos Sur, said food safety prevents food poisoning and improves the quality of food processed.
"This will lead to bigger benefits, as no food is wasted," he added.
He said said food safety requirements involve having a sanitary, well planned plant or processing shop and following processing procedures that minimize the presence of contaminants.
The DOST said the office has established a program to assist food processors on current good manufacturing practices.
Some manufacturers that the DOST has assisted include the longanisa makers of Vigan city and Bantay including producing processors of embutido and skinless longanisa. (MCA/Imelda C. Rivero/PIA1 Ilocos Sur).
