The province of Ilocos Sur will host the Region 1 Athletic Association (RIAA) meet on 2017 after it was formally announced during the awarding ceremony of R1AA 2016 in San Carlos City, Pangasinan.
It is just in time for the provincial government to accommodate this big event because the rehabilitation of the Quirino Stadium is about to be completed within this year. The modernization of the Quirino Stadium was initiated by Governor Ryan Singson to promote sports development in the province. Among the improvements are the Artificial Turf installed in the football field, the (rubberized) All-weather running track, the covered bleachers and the swimming pool area. The provincial sports committee also want to bring beach volleyball inside the stadium by building a Silica sand box.
“It is an honor for the province to be chosen as the next host for R1AA 2017. We can say that this is a big opportunity to show our potentials not just in accommodating number of visitors from other provinces but to hoist sports development in our place”
It was in the year 2002 when the province last hosted the Regional Athletic meet. Early this March 2016, a letter of intent was received by the provincial government requesting Ilocos Sur to be the next venue.
Meanwhile, the hosting of R1AA 2017 serves as a great challenge to the athletes of Ilocos Sur and their coaches. It stimulates them more to aim a higher title than their award in the previous competitions. In 2015, Ilocos Sur is the 10th among all the competing cities and provinces. It advances three notches in 2016 R1AA garnering the 7th place among the fourteen contenders. # Source – PIO Ilocos Sur
