Carrying out the directive of the President as the lead agency spearheading the federalism information drive, Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael 'Mike' D. Sueno urges barangay officials to advocate PHederalism in the conduct of Barangay Assembly last Saturday, March 25.
Sueno said that the Barangay Assembly is an appropriate venue to highlight PHederalism, a branding for a Philippine version of federalism that takes into account the cultural particularities and sensibilities of the various diverse cultural communities.
"PHederalism is our own indigenized federalism experience that reflects the identities of our people while deriving and learning from the best practices of all federal countries, thus, we reserve to attain an evolving type of federalism that is fully unique to the Philippine experience," Sueno said.
DILG Undersecretary for Legislative Liaison and Special Concerns and focal person on Federalism Emily Padilla enjoined barangay officials to be consistent partners of the government on PHederalism by leading the information dissemination drive within their respective communities.
Padilla said that the support of barangay officials during Barangay Assembly, shown by consistently and fervently creating awareness regarding PHederalism, is a crucial contribution for an informed citizenry as the government gears up for the possible shift.
The Undersecretary said that the aspiration for PHederalism will only come into fruition with the support of the barangays through consistent discussions within their localities and being firm contributors to the vision of the government in pushing the country to progress.
"Tulungan natin ang ating pamahalaan, tulungan natin ang ating Pangulo, ibaba natin ang konsepto ng pederalismo sa ating mga barangay. Federalism is our last card to attain peace and progress in our country," Padilla said.
She also said that barangay officials will be given talk points to guide them in discussing the concept of PHederalism during the Barangay Assembly.
Barangay officials are also encouraged to draft a resolution to show their support to PHederalism; a report to be submitted to the National Barangay Operation Office of DILG regarding their discussion of federalism in their barangay; and do a 'live streaming', if feasible, of their assembly. # Adapted – www.dilg.gov.ph
