COASTAL BARANGAYS ENCOURAGE PROTECTING SEASHORES

The Provincial Government through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources headed by OIC, Raymond Sinay distributed Mangrove propagules to be planted along seashores.

The seedling includes Mangrove, Botong and Talisay. These plants have common characteristics that could protect the shorelines and marines lives from the crucial impact of climate change. The seedlings and propagules were given to eight costal arangays from the municipalities of Sinait, Tagudin and Sta. Catalina.

The province aims to start down the line to create awareness and involve the community in saving the environment from degradation.

“We should do our best to keep our province a better place to live in. Our efforts today will not go to waste; it will serve the next generations.” Gov. Ryan Luis V. Singson said.
Botong is a characteristics strand plant found along the seashore throughout the Philippines. This is a tree 8 to 15 meters height. In the Philippines the tree is often cultivated for shade along boulevards and avenues by the sea. Its fruit is used as a fish poison.Talisay on the otherhand, is atropical or Country Almond tree, reaching up to 25 meters high.Mangrovesare various large and extensive types of trees up to medium height andshrubs that grow inshorelines.

These plants will serve as marine forests protecting the shorelines from erosion and water degradation. The trees absorb carbon dioxide and prevent water pollution. They can also give captivating view along the seashore and can provide shelter to the different species of marine lives.

Provincial ENRO will monitor the propagation of these species to assure that the shorelines will be dominated by these plants.

“We will be giving incentive amounting to seven pesos each seedling to be planted and compensation to be given when it will be fully grown.” PENRO OIC, Raymond Sinay added. # Source - Maryvick A. Addu/PIO Ilocos Sur
