The Department of Science and Technology conducted its annual Northluzon Science and Technology Fair in Vigan City held on September 1-3, 2015 at the Vigan City Convention Center.
The event was participated in by DOST offices in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region wherein different inventions and science and technology assisted products were showcased. Food technology bazaar was established where the different food products such as the preserved vegetables turned into chips, fermented foods and vegetable juices.
The different machines in preserving food were also introduced such as the high impact technology solutions vacuum fryer, water retort used to destroy microorganisms which cause spoilage and health hazard through the use of thermal processing and the food extruder used for cereals, corn and puffs.
Secretary Mario Montejo of the DOST reiterated the importance of science and technology in agriculture, industry, transportation and communication, education and in disaster mitigation.
In welcoming to the province the visitors from the three regions, Governor Ryan Singson said D-O-S-T has been working with the provincial government for the implementation of Science and Technology projects, such as the improvement of the PAG-ASA satellite office in Sinait, Ilocos Sur to contribute in the efficient disaster response.
Gov. Singson requested the D-O-S-T to check on the multi-line in Santa, Ilocos Sur to look on the possible improvements in producing and packaging the one town one product (OTOP) of every municipality. He also requested the possible acquisition of the equipment in preservation of food products to be used by the communities.
The provincial government plans to export the OTOP once the preservation and packaging of the products will be improved. # Source – PIO Ilocos Sur (BDMayor).
