KANNAWIDAN YLOCOS FESTIVAL: ILOCOS SUR’S PRIDE, CULTURE AND GLORY

“Kannawidan sangsangkamaysatay a rambakan.”

STRONG IN ITS 7TH MARVELOUS year is the celebration of the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival on its 8th edition, showcasing the pride and guts of Ilocanos pertaining to heritage conservation and culture preservation. Coming in the midst of Ilocanos are the festivities which will surely allure our hearts to encompass the true essence of being a proud individual. It gives us a glimpse of how was the life before and how shall we face it today.


Lighting its triumphant torch, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur never fails to continue its outstanding ventures to enjoin the people together and applaud its magnanimous culture amidst the modern trends we have in this generation. Inspired with its people, the officials of the capitol, through the leadership of our Governor Ryan Luis Singson, always bring out the best of our people. Remember that the Kannawidan Festival was established and was initiated by former Governor and now the Vice Governor Deogracias Victor DV Savellano. Singson this year, as we commence our 7th year celebration of the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival, we shall witness another milestone of quality and majestic programs and activities which will highlight the strengthening overview of a true Ilocano. Governor Singson mentioned: “We want to preserve our heritage, considering that Vigan is now included in the New Seven Wonder Cities of the world. The youth has a vital role in prospering our culture and be able to foster a genuine view of how can we sustain this milestone.” Expect the enjoyment, the thrill and the excitement of this year’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival: bringing the best to the Ilocano people which will start on January 29, 2015. This year brings us lots of changes and innovation as Gov. Ryan preferred it from a week of festivities extending it to almost a month, in order to have longer time to enjoy the event, giving opportunities to our constituents coming from farther municipalities to grace the merriments.               

“We made the 8thKannawidan Ylocos Festival longer; loaded with fun and exciting activities that would allow our people become participative and joyful.” Gov. Singson added. Highlighting the 8th Kannawidan are Spiritual thanksgiving activities such as the Concelebrated Mass at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral and the scenic procession of all the Municipal patrons around the heritage city of Vigan, a feast of food with the Kinnammet: the traditional boodle fight and the viewing of the magnificent dancing fountain and with the sky’s beauty towards the Rimat ti Tangatang through a fireworks display. Talents of the Ilocanos will also have its peak in its night as the Siglat Ylocandia conducts its annual grand finals. Alongside with its formal commencement is the merriment of the DepEd Day and the bright life of a fashion show giving prominence to the Kadaanan a pagan-anay or the clothing of the past. Be jingled with the wits of stars as they join us merry making in the evening’s Kapuso night. Feel the heat of the Bakbakan or the first ever boxing games in the province, recognize our meritorious Gawad Titong Singson awardees and add the tremors of cute and petite little ladies for the Saniata ti ubbing giving emphasis on the role of children in propagating Ilocano culture in their young age. It is a joyful Buena mano for the month of February as the Kannawidan holds continuous activtiies with an early fun run for our oldies, coming back at its evening point as we celebrate the life of Padre Burgos today with his very own Fr. Burgos awards completing its jump in to the Banda Rito banda Roon, shaking the grounds with outpoured Ilocano music and dances. Celebrate the grandeur of Sinniriban (Quizbee) challenging young minds pertaining to Ilocano heritage, scrutinizing and bringing out the new poets of Ilocos as our agtutubo’s gear for a poem writing contest. Artistic façade covers the Quirino Stadium for the Culture/Tradition Showcase, Maris ti Kailokoan and the high demanding exhibit of Bonsais. Rock the house as the province launches its First dance craze, also, giving another acknowledgment to our praiseworthy youngsters who gave pride and honor to Ilocandia in the annual Siglat Eskwela Awards. DTI marvels the people as it expose the OPAG Pinaka and Livestock Pinaka Contest plus awakening Ilocano spirit through different products and booths. Hooray for today lights up moving our tongues with greatest flavors in the First Chef wars and tummies to be filled with the First ever Longganisa Eating Contest. Invited are we to witness the Siglat ti Barangay Awards, join the Bingo Socials and be tantalized with the Zarzuela Ilocana and a pre-valentine special which will surely bring the ambience of love serenity and eternity. Celebrate the uniqueness of an Ilocana beauty in the Saniata ti Ilocos Sur pageant featuring the Saniatas of each municipalities and two cities here. A facet of the arts visible in the Salisal ti Disenyo ken Panagpinta, MMA Fight Competition and a remarkable soothing music and entertainment from the Salisal dagiti artista. Fun, fun, fun houses the Salisal ti banda. Feel the mood of Mexico as a Rodeo Parade comes with its second wave of amusement. Children, young ones and young at heart celebrate the traditional games with its funniest moments and twists, and for a more thrilling adventure, why not try becoming part of the two-day shooting play-offs. Mark the pleasure to horse fanatics as we bring you the Lumba ti kabalyo, how about tuning in to the latest buzz with the First Media Awards, which will let our local artists and programs take a bow. Spend the last days of our kannawidan with a Motorshow that will thrill your nerves out. Add up the heat of the sun, the newly and freshest water sports scheme: the SUN SOAKED which highlights sorts of sports competitions such as surfing, dragon boat racing, Frisbee and other games which will take place in Cabugao Beach Resort in an ealier date this January. There you have it folks, why settle for less if we could give you the best.
