PNP ILOCOS PART OF PAPAL VISIT’S SECURITY TEAM

POLICEMEN FROM REGION 1 will be part of the security task force for the six day-visit of Pope Francis to the country from January 15-19, 2015.

Police Supt. Marlon Paiste, Public Information Office Chief of PNP in the Ilocos, said augmentation teams from the regional office and the four PNP provincial offices will form part of the Security Task Force Papal Visit 2015.

Police Dep. Dir. General Leonardo Espina, PNP Deputy Chief for operations, will lead the troops as the task force Commander.

The Region 1 troops will be led by Battalion Commander Police Supt. Jaysen De Guzman of the Regional Public Safety Battalion while Company Commanders from the Provincial Police offices will also lead their teams, Paiste said.

He said the Task Force is looking at a “zero untoward incident” for the duration of the visit.

Meanwhile, Police Supt. Mona Liza Asis, of the PNP La Union police community relations, said the police troops will secure the Pope in all his engagements including millions of Filipinos who are expected to attend the Papal mass and other church-related engagements.

The Pope’s trip to the country is a state visit and an apostolic journey, Asis said.

The public is assured that the PNP’s anti-criminality campaign and other normal public safety operations in the areas where the Pope will visit will not be compromised, she added.

Asis said the PNP Directorate for Intelligence has been monitoring the activities of local threat groups with focus on the country’s southern part.
